About This Project
I was prompted to begin this project for many different reasons.
I traveled to Morocco with my grandparents in August of 2011; that was the first time in a long while that we were able to spend quality time together. Visiting the expansive deserts, shopping in the colorful markets, and learning about the cultural differences between Northern Africa and America all provided me with amazing memories, but the alone time I got to spend with my grandparents truly made the trip remarkable.
I was also inclined to start One Life Lesson because of the stroke my grandfather suffered. Thankfully, his ability to speak was barley affected, but there was a chance he would have been limited for the rest of his life. I saw this experience as a wakeup call. My grandfather, a Holocaust survivor, would not be around forever and in order to encapsulate some of his wisdom, I needed to document.
Lastly, my work with DOROT, a non-profit organization that aids housebound senior citizens, gave me a new perspective on aging and thus, a more clear idea about immortalizing lessons. Meeting active, passionate, and warm senior citizens has redefined was age means to me. There is often a negative connotation associated with growing older, but I have learned that age brings wisdom and experience, and that is something that should be celebrated.
